What do Japanese entrepreneurs want? Research for expansion of toB business into Japan

Client-Overseas EC Platform Service Company        Senior Researcher-Naoko Okawachi

Summary

At the request of a leading foreign company providing EC site construction services, in-depth interviews were conducted with young entrepreneurs.

Points

  • We clarified the image of entrepreneurs in Japan by conducting interviews that included not only business models and strategies but also personal life histories. These histories explored aspects such as opposition from those around them to their entrepreneurial endeavors and any anxieties they might have had.
  • Data that are generally difficult to generalize and quantify, such as “entrepreneurial thinking” and “mindset,” were verbalized, compiled into information, and provided to the client.

Research Objective

The client offers a service that allows for easy establishment of EC sites. Therefore, individuals who want to start their own business, those who have started a business but have not yet embraced EC, and those using different EC services are considered potential customers.
The purpose of the
research was to uncover the concerns these individuals have and what they expect from an EC service (both the service itself and its features) to aid in devising the optimal marketing strategy in Japan.

Research methodology

Subjects: Three young entrepreneurs and three aspiring entrepreneurs selected from various ages, backgrounds, and entrepreneurial fields.
Method  : One-on-one in-depth interviews (primarily face-to-face, with some online).
The interviews explored what was prioritized in starting a business, thoughts on taking risks, whom they consulted, what difficulties they encountered, and what challenges exist in entrepreneurship.
